A healthy lifestyle, in general, means you do not smoke or use recreational drugs, you have a healthy weight, eat healthy and exercise. By making small changesyou can start living healthy without drastic changes. Activity One of the biggest we encounter is lack of activity. It's good for us but avoid it because we're in a sedentary rut or think exercise has to be vigorous and time consuming to be worth while. However, even minimal amounts can improve your health. Moderate activities like chores, gardening and walking can make a difference. Add a little extra to the amount you're doing already. Adding a little activity may: Reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes Improve joint stability Increase and improve range of movement Help maintain flexibility as you age Maintain bone mass Prevent osteoporosis and fractures Improve mood and reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression Enhance self esteem Improve memory in elderly people Reduce stress Easy Activity Add Ons Add a little more activity to your lifestyle. Start with something small. Every little bit counts. Jogging on the spot while there;s a commercial, doing stretches while you're on the phone, do some arm curls with a can of soup. It will pay off! Turn off the TV and get active with your family. Play games or take a walk. You'll be setting a good example for them and it's much more fun to do it with company. Walking is one of the healthiest activities you can do. Do it more. Use the stairs instead of elevators, take a walk to the corner store instead of driving, take the dog for an extra walk each day or get on your treadmill for 5 minutes before getting ready for work. Household chores like snow shovelling, gardening, raking leaves, sweeping and vacuuming all keep you moving and give you a great looking home. Walk while you talk. While you're on the phone, pace around, stretch, jog on the spot, move! It's a great way to get two things done at once. Work Work-outs. While at your desk do some twists or leg lifts in your chair. Don't forget to get up and stretch once in a while. It's great for the circulation, easing muscles and state of mind. Eating Healthfully Eating a healthy diet is a big part of a healthy lifestyle. Add berries it to your cereal, seeds to your salads, a tomato on your sandwich, peppers on your pizza, or extra veggies in your pasta sauce. Keep pre-cut or canned/frozen veggies ready for quick snacks. Switch to lighter salad dressings and you'll quickly cut down on calories. Eat low-fat or fat-free dairy. Skim milk or fat free yogurt is easy and not a big change to your every day diet. Check labels and make the healthy choice. it might be tough to change in the beginning but you'll get used to the new foods and it will improve your lifestyle in the end. Make small changes you can stick with. Drastic changes never last long. This is a life long commitment to your health and well being. Make it worth the effort. |
